The problem with bread is that it tends to be way too high in carbs.  Often the sugar content is rather high so you have to be careful.  Fortunately I've found a few breads and bread-like items that make a low carb diet much easier to maintain.

  • Sara Lee 45 Calories & Delightful Multi Grain Bread:  Two slices of this bread runs you only 90 calories with 6 grams of protein and 18 grams of carbs of which 5 grams are fiber.
  • Village Hearth Light Italian Bread.  Two slices runs only 80 calories with 4 grams of fiber and 5 grams of protein.  Perhaps not quite as healthy as that Sara Lee bread but you die for a good white bread, this is great.
  • Thomas Brand Better Start Light Multi Grain English Muffins:  1 whole muffin has 100 calories with 5 grams of protein, 26 grams of carb of which 8 grams are fiber.
  • Mission Brand Carb Balance Flour Tortillas (Medium): 120 calories each with 5 grams of protein, 18 grams of carb of which a whooping 11 grams are fiber.  My 16 year old loves these!

Enjoy - these are all great!

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to update you all that with my new diet tweaks I've taken all grains out of my diet which means I'm not eating any bread products right now.  Nonetheless, I still like and recommend the products above for anyone who wants to eat grains.

New update....

I am allowing 1 grain serving a day back in my diet.  I've done this in part due to doing some 'doubles' work and needing a bit more accessible carb to burn off.  I'm still only eating from the breads list above when I do have a bread product.

New Bread Item:  Bagels!

I found Thomas Brand 100% Whole Wheat Bagel Thins.  Now admittedly these work because they are thin.  But I don't care.  I like bagels and this is one way I can occasionally indulge.

Total Carb:  24g

Fiber:           5g

Protein:       6g

Fat:            1g

Calories     110/129

I show calories 2 ways.  The 110 is what the bag says but if you calculate the calories based on grams of carb, protein, and fat, you get the higher amount.  It seems like Thomas brand calculates calories excluding fiber grams.

I eat my bagels with cream cheese.  I don't buy the low fat kind though.  I buy whipped which gives me the best taste but since it's whipped (full of air) I use so much less it's actually fewer calories.
