Nancy Front 070410 150plain P90X Supplements or Insanity Supplements Do You Need Them?I get this question regularly. But before I can answer this question, we need to define what ‘supplements’ are. This is particularly important when it comes to protein powder. I don’t consider this a supplement because it’s really a food. A good shake replaces some other food you would have eaten otherwise. Would you consider cottage cheese a supplement? I think not.  And when you buy a larger container of a high quality supplement, you can basically have a meal for less than $1.00 and that’s pretty cheap for a meal.

I also don’t consider a multi vitamin a supplement. Sure it’s not a food but in today’s high stress world where even the best of us don’t eat enough fresh, organic fruits and veggies, a well balanced multi vitamin makes sense. Moreover, when doing an extreme program like P90X, you have additional stress on the body which means you need a higher level of vitamins and minerals to keep your body nourished.

So while we could debate these two items as supplements or not, for sake of argument, I’ll put these down as ‘must have supplements’

  • High quality protein powder.  I use the Gaspari brand Myofusion for an evening shake (high protein and very low carb and fat) shortly before I go to bed.  For those looking for the ultimate in nutrition, consider Shakeology.I use Shakeology in the mornings after I workout.  Shakeology is definitely a meal replacement shake with over 70 nutrients.  Because it has ingredients that are energizers (maca & chia seeds) I recommend you take Shakeology during the day and not at night.   You can get by with just the Myofusion if you are on a budget.  Also I tell my clients that if your primary goal is just weight loss, Myofusion gets the job done.  But if your goal is total health in a lean body, and you have the budget, Shakeology is a great investment.
  • High quality multi vitamin.  I’ve used Activit before and liked it.  Right now I’m on Nature’s Way Alive multi vitamin.  I like this one because it adds green foods, bioflavanoids, enzymes, amino acids and more so it’s more readily absorbed and used by the body.

Now after these two ‘must haves’, I’m a lot more flexible.  However, I’m a very curious person and like to try out different supplements.  So here’s what I currently take:xtend 150pxw P90X Supplements or Insanity Supplements Do You Need Them?

  • My #1 supplement is Xtend.  This is a branched chain amino acid supplement that helps me add lean muscle and recover from hard workouts more quickly without adding any calories.  I love this.  It costs me about $.65 per day to add this.
  • Jack3d or Gaspari’s Superpump250.  These are what are referred to as NO or nitric oxide supplements.  They don’t actually contain any NO but ingredients thought to produce higher levels of NO.  NO will give you better muscle pumps and greater stamina.  I like both of these although I find I lean up more on Superpump 250.  Jack3d is a smaller serving and mixes much more easily in water.  Great for men and women who want to add more lean mass.  Please note that these supplements have stimulents in them.  While it can get you motivated to workout, I would not take them if you are doing an evening workout.
  • Thyroid Support supplement.  This is for women who know that their thyroid is low functioning.  Many women in their 40′s and later could use thyroid support.  I like Beachbody’s Total Woman formula.  Taking a supplement like the Total Woman’s Health formula can help accelerate fat burning (particularly from the belly) and increase energy levels without stimulants.
  • OxyElite Pro Fat Burner.  As a rule, I don’t like fat burners because once you put the advertising hype aside and do the research, there isn’t much in these fat burners that has any proof that it will help you burn fat other than caffiene.   And for that you could just have a cup of coffee or green tea before working out for less!  However, I recently stumbled upong this OxyElite which has different ingredients and I am rather impressed with this.  In fact, I’m going to write an entire post about fat burners tomorrow and explain why this one is different.
  • Creatine.  This is something I’m currently dabbling with as a woman even though its use is targeted towards men.  It is NOT recommended if you are trying to burn fat.  Creatine is a muscle building supplement and the way these formulas get your body to absorb the creatine is to blend it with sugars.  Ingesting sugar will stop your fat burning so this is a supplement for a specific use for building muscle.  Great for men to take to pack on more beefy mass.  But if you are going to take it you must drink a lot of water and you really need to cycle off of this once you consume a container so you don’t overload your kidneys.

So now you know.  Remember a high quality protein, a good multi vitamin and a good diet will do 80%+ of the job.  The rest is for those who want the added edge and can afford it!

Finally, with the exception of creatine, these are the same supplements I recommend for Turbo Fire and Insanity!

    Would you recommend the Total Woman Formula for somebody with hypothyroidism? I currently am taking prescribed medications to control my thyroid, but I sometimes feel this hinders any weight loss I am trying to achieve. Thanks!

    Normally I like the Total Woman formula for women who are low thyroid or borderline. However, as you are on a medication, you should consult with your doctor to make sure that there would be no interaction with the medication you are on.


  3. Hey Nancy, was looking around for an opinion about taking a multivitamin during Insanity and decided to buy Nature’s Way Alive and give it a shot! I’ve done insanity once through with no multivitamin or protein powder but now I’m looking into doing Insanity combined with weight lifting on the side.

    I have a question about protein powder though; what are the important ingredients to look for when deciding on a protein powder? I’m looking to burn fat and get really toned. Thanks!

  4. Hi Ethan,

    I’ve used Nature’s Way vitamins and liked them.

    As far as protein, the best type of protein changes with timing of intake. For example, first thing in the morning or immediately post workout I’d say a high quality whey protein hands down because it will absorb really fast. When shopping for whey, you can go with whey isolate which is the highest quality and fastest acting but also most expensive and typically has a less desirable taste and smell. So the next step down is to get a blend of whey proteins and peptides. The one I’m taking right now is Optimum Classic Whey because the price is really good, taste is good, blends easily and has biologically active whey protein microfractions including Alpha-lactalbumin, Glycomacropeptides, Beta-lactoglobulin, Immunoglobulin G (IgG), Lactoferrin, lactoperoxidase, and various growth factors which should help boost your HGH levels which then gets you more muscle and lower body fat.

    Now if you are going to take protein before bed for repair and recovery, go with casein protein which is very slow to digest and, therefore should keep you in an anabolic state for more of your sleeping hours. In my opinion casein protein doesn’t taste as good as a good whey or blended protein but it’s OK.

    Finally if you are going to just get one protein to meet a lot of needs, go with a blended protein source. I am using Optimum’s Nitro 24 and got the Surpreme Cinnamon Roll flavor and love it. I mix it with oatmeal and it makes a fantastic breakfast. I also have the chocolate flavor. In the past I’ve also used Gaspari brand Myofusion and think their chocolate flavor is better tasting than Optimum’s flavor but it costs a bit more. Overall Optimum brand is currently one of the highest rated protein brands on Bodybuilding.com.

    Now call me silly but what I do is buy all three kinds of protein (whey, casein and blend). Sure it costs me more up front but the protein doesn’t go bad so it will sit while I work my way through it. (I also am buying for three of us so we do go through big tubs pretty fast.) Buy the larger tubs for best price although you may want to try some in smaller tubs to see if you like the flavors.

    BTW, right now Optimum has a stack of a 5lb tub of whey protein and 2lb tub of casein protein for $68.98 which if you order you get a bottle of their Optimen vitamin for free (a very good vitamin) and a free container of their fiber powder.     Lastly I feel I would be remiss if I didn’t touch on eggs as a fantastic protein source. A cooked egg is one of the highest biologically available proteins around. And they are pretty cheap. I hard boil eggs by the dozen and my boys and I have them for late afternoon snacks often.

    Do u recommend taking Iso pure as a supplement while playing insanity ?
    My weight is 66.2 and 172 cm tall

  6. Hi Wafik,

    Iso Pure is a good whey protein isolate. Since it’s an isolate, it’s VERY quickly absorbed so it’s best used right after a workout. I can’t tell how muscular you are by weight and height but it doesn’t matter if you are trying to lose body fat or increase muscle mass, the protein will help you do both. A rule of thumb is that you need 2 grams of protein per KG of weight if you are just trying to lean up and 3 grams per KG if you are trying to add mass for men. For women, it would be less at 1.5 grams per KG if you are going for lean and 2 grams of protein per KG if you are trying to add muscle.
