Avocados are a Superfood to Include in Your Anti-aging DietAug 6th, 2012 | By Nancy Andrews | Category: Coach Nancy - The Way I See It..., Living the Fit Life, Nutrition & Weight Loss
Let’s face it, when you are over 50 as I am, you start thinking more about how to live longer. No one wants to think their time is winding down. And even as we accept that perhaps we now have more years behind us than before us, we want every year to be full of health and vitality. That’s why I’ve been really focused on my diet as a main tool to not only fuel my body’s demands for nutrition today but also as a way to rebuild my body at a cellular level for maximum health and energy.
To that end, I’m going to cover a series of foods that I eat on a regular basis and what they can do for you. And I’ll tell you how I add them into my diet. Today’s superfood is the avocado.
Health Benefits of the Avocado:
It’s hard to determine where to start. This ‘fruit’ is loaded with healthy fats, fiber (soluble and insoluble), vitamin E, many of the B vitamins (especially folate), lutein, and potassium. And on top of all this, it’s a great anti-inflammatory food. If you want to live longer and healthier, restructuring your diet to include more anti inflammatory foods is highly recommended. All these nutrients have been shown to offer us the following health benefits:
- Cancer Prevention: Avocados seem to be helpful in preventing prostrate, oral and breast cancers.
- Lower cholesterol levels due to naturally occurring beta-sitosterol which in one study with 45 people led to an average drop in cholesterol levels of 17% after just ONE week. Imagine that!
- Better absorption of nutrients in foods eaten with avocados. In a well known ‘salad’ study, individuals who were eating avocados in their salads absorbed more nutrients than those participants who ate salads without avocados.
- Increased glutathione levels. Glutathione is a major player in keeping us healthy. For those of us interested in slowing the aging process to a crawl, this is one important tri-peptide that works to protect our cells from free radical damage. So eating foods high in glutathione is a must and avocados are one of those foods.
